Case Studies The following is a partial list of client
engagements performed over the past few months. Wireless Networking Installation Project
for Westchester not-for-profit In light of rising cost of premise wiring
and reduction in cost of wireless technology, S.A.M. CONSULTING proposed
and installed wireless technology for a White Plains not-for-profit organization.
The required `new' wiring cost justified the installation of the wireless
network. In addition, because the client tends to reorganize internally,
future wiring projects can be eliminated adding further economies to the
project. Upon conclusion of the project wireless access to the network
can be achieved from any of the client's seven offices. S.A.M. CONSULTING (SAMCON) was called upon to assist in the relocation of a not-for-profit organization with offices throughout Rockland, Westchester and Suffolk counties. The relocation of the Organization’s corporate headquarters and data center required facilities planning, telecommunication support, frame-relay reconfiguration and logistics management. Prior to the relocation, the Organization asked S.A.M. CONSULTING to specify all requirements for the relocation to be successful and turned project responsibility over to SAMCON. S.A.M. CONSULTING began
by interviewing users, preparing work plans, creating work orders, and
contacting third party companies to prepare for the move. SAMCON
reviewed the floor plan for the new computer center and worked with the
architect to create the proper environment for the relocation. T-1 and
the associated frame relay network had to be relocated and reconfigured.
Because the Organization operated 6 days a week, it was imperative that
the network be relocated and back on line by the close of the next business
day. The site was taken down and relocated on Friday and was operational
by Saturday 2:00 PM, with all sites functional. The relocation was
deemed a success by all parties involved. This
multi-site law firm has been a client of S.A.M. CONSULTING, since 1992.
The client uses SAMCON as their "virtual MIS department", completely
outsourcing all services. When document management became an increasing
problem for the firm, they turned to SAMCON for assistance. The
goals were to implement a system that was effective in enforcing end-users
to organize documents in an orderly manner, was fast and easy to use and
was affordable. SAMCON proposed Worldox document management software
which met the client's criteria. The client continues to use Worldox since
its implementation in 1997. In 1994, S.A.M. CONSULTING was requested to develop a program that would allow a major not for profit golfing association to consolidate their mission critical DOS based databases. At the time, data was stored in several different files, making it almost impossible to keep information up to date. In addition, data would need to be repeatedly reentered causing loss of productivity and inaccuracies in data entered. S.A.M. CONSULTING worked
with the organization to reshape the way they did business. The
outcome was a highly customized, windows based application that provided
the clients with the screens and data organization that the client needed
to be successful. Today, SAMCON is helping integrate the database
with the organization's web site. The project to install Microsoft Exchange is currently in the planning process. The Organization is migrating from a centralized mail system that is provided by an ASP, to in-house Microsoft Exchange Server. The key reasons for the migration include better control of the e-mail functions, use of newsgroups and bulletin boards, shared calendar use, task management and establishing the organizations own identity through a unique domain name. The planned roll out
will be in three phases; server installation/configuration, roll out of
three main sites, and finally the roll out of eleven remaining sites.
Pre-roll out preparation includes firewall configuration, x.400 interface
installation, unit testing, stress testing, operations testing, migration
planning, development of training plan. It is anticipated that the
conversion will require six weeks. The Northpoint Bankruptcy was a surprise to most in the computing industry and the results of the bankruptcy could have been devastating. However, S.A.M. CONSULTING was quick to respond to our clients needs to remain connected to the Internet during the transition period to new DSL providers. With the announcement of bankruptcy, Northpoint cautioned the business community that service would be disconnected at any time. Northpoint pulled service from the region on Sunday and clients found themselves without service on Monday. S.A.M. CONSULTING initiated action to search out new DSL providers and define a low cost, easy to deploy dialup solution, that was installed and tested in advance. The plan S.A.M. CONSULTING developed to accommodate its clients included Netopia dial up routing technology and Microsoft's Proxy Server. Most clients were without access for less than a day. Click
